Gathering Sources
Yesterday, while conducting interviews at the Creeping Cove fishery, I procured information about Ivan Murtin from two of his coworkers: Mike McGraw and the previously cited Fargo North.
Last night, after I had visited Murtin’s house, I encountered the pair of fishermen again while getting dinner at a local diner (Fargo wants me to mention that it was Millie’s Diner we were eating at, as if mentioning it to Westport readers is anything in the way of advertising), and they inquired into my investigation.
Based on our brief talks, Mike seems frankly enthusiastic to aid in my investigation, while Fargo seems quite reluctant. I at first read her reluctance and general apparent mistrust of me as suspicious, but after mentioning Murtin to several other locals, I have found that her attitude is not an uncommon one.
Regardless of their differences (and their actual potential usefulness as sources), Mike and Fargo seem to be a package deal, and it’s good to have a few locals who are on my side. They’ve both lived in the Cove their whole lives and will likely prove a helpful resource in my case.
Forging these sorts of relationships with the community, however small, is a vital early step in any investigation. Until next time, Westport, I’ve been Iowa Walsh.
